Collective Projects

Radio as practice, not as channel.

The radio projects initiated by Laurent Schmid are experimental platforms situated between art, sound, conversation and collective thinking. They approach radio not as a linear broadcasting medium, but as a temporary space in which voices, ideas and sounds circulate, overlap and occasionally contradict one another.

Whether location-based or nomadic, live or fragmentary, the projects deliberately operate outside traditional programme structures. They privilege openness, improvisation and situated forms of knowledge. Radio becomes an artistic practice here: a method of thinking-through-making, a tool for exchange and resonance, and a way of rendering processes audible that resist stabilisation or clear definition.

Radio als Praxis, nicht als Kanal.

Die von Laurent Schmid initiierten Radioprojekte sind experimentelle Plattformen zwischen Kunst, Sound, Gespräch und kollektivem Denken. Sie verstehen Radio nicht als lineares Sendemedium, sondern als temporären Raum, in dem Stimmen, Ideen und Klänge zirkulieren, sich überlagern und mitunter widersprechen.

Ob ortsgebunden oder nomadisch, live oder fragmentarisch: Die Projekte operieren bewusst ausserhalb klassischer Programmstrukturen. Im Zentrum stehen Offenheit, Improvisation und situierte Formen von Wissen. Radio wird hier zu einer künstlerischen Praxis – als Methode des Denkens im Machen, als Werkzeug für Austausch und Resonanz, und als Möglichkeit, Prozesse hörbar zu machen, die sich Stabilisierung oder eindeutiger Zuschreibung entziehen.

Curating

Recent curatorial projects by Laurent Schmid include Lovesongs for Plants/The Leaves Whisperers at Espace Labo and PULSAR. The Secret Life of Us All: Poetiken eines Ineinandergehens within the framework of IRMA Republic.

Lovesongs for Plants explored forms of address between human and non-human entities, using sound, text and performative gestures to question notions of care, intimacy and projection across species. The exhibition treated the space less as a container for works than as a resonant environment in which attention, listening and speculative empathy could be rehearsed.

PULSAR approached curating as a poetic and epistemic exercise. Bringing together artistic, discursive and fictional elements, the project investigated modes of entanglement and co-existence, foregrounding processes of mutual influence rather than fixed identities. The exhibition unfolded as a temporary constellation — a site where knowledge emerged through proximity, friction and shared vulnerability.

Across these projects, curating functions as a practice of situated articulation: creating conditions for relations to form, remain unstable and produce meaning without closure.

Zu den jüngsten kuratorischen Projekten von Laurent Schmid zählen Lovesongs for Plants im Espace Labo sowie PULSAR. The Secret Life of Us All: Poetiken eines Ineinandergehens im Rahmen von IRMA Republic.

Lovesongs for Plants untersuchte Formen der Ansprache zwischen menschlichen und nicht-menschlichen Akteuren. Mit Sound, Text und performativen Setzungen wurde ausgelotet, wie Fürsorge, Intimität und Projektion über Artgrenzen hinweg gedacht und erprobt werden können. Der Ausstellungsraum fungierte dabei weniger als Präsentationsfläche denn als resonantes Milieu, in dem Zuhören, Aufmerksamkeit und spekulative Empathie eingeübt wurden.

PULSAR verstand Kuratieren als poetisch-epistemische Praxis. In der Verschränkung künstlerischer, diskursiver und fiktionaler Elemente untersuchte das Projekt Formen des Ineinandergehens und der Ko-Existenz. Im Zentrum standen Prozesse gegenseitiger Beeinflussung statt stabiler Identitäten. Die Ausstellung erschien als temporäre Konstellation — ein Ort, an dem Wissen aus Nähe, Reibung und geteilter Verletzlichkeit hervorgeht.

Über beide Projekte hinweg wird Kuratieren als situierte Praxis der Artikulation begriffen: als das Schaffen von Bedingungen, unter denen Beziehungen entstehen, instabil bleiben und Bedeutung ohne Abschluss erzeugen können.

Laurent Schmid is a Swiss artist, editor, and publisher based in Bern and Geneva. His work investigates the construction of forms of truth, subjectivity, and the personae of both human and non-human entities — including algorithms, which he approaches as active agents in our epistemic and aesthetic regimes. Operating at the intersection of science, fiction, and critical media theory, Schmid explores the porous boundaries between rationalism and esotericism, often invoking storytelling as a method to unsettle dominant epistemologies.

His conceptually driven practice oscillates between digital and analogue media and includes photography, sound, installations, performative lectures, and radio works. He is also the founder of publishing initiatives such as activeRat, Speckled Toshe and laptopradiø, which foster interdisciplinary collaborations in the fields of contemporary art, experimental sound, and posthumanist thought.

Lives and works in Bern and Geneva. Studied at the Schools of Design in Basel and Bern, as well as at the University of Bern (1981–1986). Since 1987, he has taught at various design schools and universities of the arts. From 2008 to 2021, he directed, taught, and conducted research in the Work.Master program (MFA in Visual Arts) at HEAD – Genève.
Schmid’s conceptually driven practice moves between digital and analog media, ranging from photography to sound art.
Awards and distinctions include the Aeschlimann-Corti Scholarship (1986), Swiss Art Award (1991), Aargau Arts Council Promotion Prize (1994), Viper Swiss Award for Media Arts (2001), a residency at the City of Bern’s New York studio (2015), and a monographic publication grant by the Canton of Bern (2012).

Laurent Schmid is an artist and editor whose work investigates the relationships between the construction of forms of truth, subjectivity and the personae of human and non-human individuals.

1. Approach

Laurent Schmid develops narrative types of laboratory trials in the field of scientific and pseudoscientific physics, and it’s reception and influence in our society. An inquiry which leads to questions of faith, of rationalism and anti-rationalism, and finally also to magic and spirituality. This ultimately places the role of storytelling in areas with a focus on facts, such as science, at the centre of his investigations.

His work is oscillating between digital and analogue media, he is doing performative-lectures, interactive works, radio, videos but also installations, drawings and, in particular, photos.

He runs activeRat, a publishing house and label (since 1998), and Speckled-Toshe, an Vinyl LP label records with sounds by visual artists and contemporary musicians. He is organizing and (co-) curating events and exhibitions (e.g. «Version Bêta», CIC – Centre de l’Image Contemporaine, Geneva, 2008). In 2016 he initiated Sou-Sou, a collective curating project at Kino Rex, Bern. (until 2019). A sound-oriented curatorial project with the radio collective Radio Tramontana was: «Freundeskreise» in «Sviluppo-Parallelo» at Kunstmuseum Luzern, it followed our former projects in this context at ISR Roma and Milano, or museo MA*GA, Gallarate. He has been involved in collective artistic radio projects since 2007, such as laptopradiø.org.
